International Baccalaureate (IB)

JQES is a candidate school* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme and is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.

*Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary YearsProgramme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme (CP). What is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP)?

• A curriculum framework founded on a philosophy that recognizes a child’s natural curiosity, creativity, and ability to reflect

• Promotes a lifelong love of learning in all students through inquiry and self-assessment

• Develops students’ social, research, thinking, communication, and self-management skills

• Closely aligned to our school’s vision of “preparing the next generation to be contributing global citizens”

Does the IB have its own set of standards?

• No. We will still follow the Common Core and Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and will still take MCAS assessments. Teachers will collaborate to build engaging transdisciplinary units of study that integrate the standards into the following six themes: Who we are, Where we are in place and time, How we express ourselves, How the world works, How we organize ourselves, and Sharing the planet.

Who will benefit from our participation in the IB PYP program?

• All Josiah Quincy students, regardless of program (Regular Education, SEI, Special Education, Advanced Work) will receive the same rigorous instruction and have the same learning opportunities and outcomes 

• Teachers will attend professional development within a network of IB teachers and collaborate with colleagues to plan units of study and use best practices to deliver content to all students

• Members of our local community, with whom we will continue to build strong partnerships
